LTAC hospitals are designed for patients who require a longer acute care hos- pitalization for critical and complex medical and surgical conditions. Most often these patients have serious medical conditions that require a level of care above that offered in a rehabilitation hospital or cen- ter, skilled nursing facility, sub- acute residential setting or other lower level of care. Patients admitted to an LTAC hospital tend to be medically complex with multiple medical issues due a chronic illness; multiple injuries; trauma; and pulmonary, post-surgical and/or medical complications. Based upon their unique med- ical needs, LTAC hospital patients typically require an extended hospital stay of 25 days or more on average, dur- ing which time both short- and long-term goals are set.
