Fun Facts & Points of Interest

Grüetzi! That’s the official way to greet friends in New Glarus. In 1845, twenty-seven immigrant famiies set out from Glarus, Switzerland seeking opportunities in the New World. We like to imagine that upon arriving in Green County, they looked around and said something like “ja, die hugel gseh us wi die daheim!” (yes these hills DO look a bit like home!) And so the community of New Glarus was founded. In 1846, Swiss immigrants helped to set the stage for Wisconsin’s future as America’s Dairyland when they purchased a few dozen dairy cows in Ohio and herded them back to New Glarus.

The Swiss roots established here more than 150 years ago are evident today in festivals, cuisine, folk art and architecture, family and business names, and the herds of Brown Swiss that still graze the green hillsides. Until the clocks in the bell tower of the Swiss Church were electrified in 1947, they ran from cables and heavy weights, and took a half-day to wind so they would run for the entire week. Eat local! Swiss favorites include cheese fondue (the Swiss national dish), roesti (ramped-up hash browns) raclette (melted cheese over boiled potatoes and pickles), and a fresh veal sausage called

depot that doubles as trailhead for the Sugar River Trail) is your one-stop shop for maps and visitor information. Music Fest, Heidi Fest, Fire Fest, Oktober Fest. New Glarus is known for festivals and family fun. Bike first, so you can eat more cheese: bring your own (or rent a bike at the chamber office) to enjoy the Sugar River Trail or the roller coaster hills on the backroads. There’s live music (and dancing) at New Glarus Hotel most Friday and Saturday evenings. Thursday nights in summer - head to the Chalet Landhaus for accordion music on the patio. Tofflers Pub and Grill also frequently features live music (outside on the back patio in the warmer months) - including local favorite “The Jimmy’s” every other Thursday night. Jodlerklub, Mannerchor, Kinderchor: our Swiss heritage is something to sing about. If you see two guys wandering around playing tunes on long wooden horns embellished with Swiss folk art, it’s probably George and Heinz - two of Green County’s favorite alphorn ambassadors. Stay awhile: our variety of wonderful lodging options include hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, vacation home rental, and campground.

That’s not just any accordion player entertaining at “Swiss Cookout” nights on the patio at Chalet Landhaus – that’s legendary bandmaster Larry Daehn who just happens to play accordion on the side. Larry started with accordion lessons “way back” at nine years old. By high school he was playing trumpet and French horn. Fast-forward with a bachelor’s degree from UW Oshkosh and a master’s from UW Platteville, followed by a busy teaching career including elementary, middle and high school band, chorus and classroom music. Larry was commissioned to compose the West Point Bicentennial March by the United States Military Academy Band, which premiered at Carnegie Hall. In addition to many awards and honors, he was named Outstanding Bandmaster by Phi Beta Mu, Pi Chapter, in 1988. Meanwhile, the accordion sat in the closet. After 35 years in the classroom (including 27 in New Glarus), Larry retired. And he dusted off the accordion. About ten years ago, Chef Mike Nevil recruited him for a regular gig at the cookouts. He’s been playing ever since. Stop in and say hello to Legendary Larry at the Chalet Landhaus on Thursday nights from May through October.

Bier Haus – surely you’ve heard the saying “man cave” – well what about a beer cave? At the Bier Haus (next to Swiss Aire Motel along Hwy. 69) you can choose from more than 150 different kinds of craft beers in their 400 square foot Beer Cave. There’s also wine and liquor, cheese, meats and party snacks.

Instead of sugar plums dancing in his head, Mark Janowiak had visions of Limburger when he came up with the concept for a New Glarus project called Books for Kids. But since it takes more than the wave of a magic wand to turn Limburger into reading material, here’s the story: Mark is a member of New Glarus Vision, an umbrella organization that provides nearly a dozen smaller community groups with the framework necessary to operate as non-profits. With insurance and by-laws in place under the umbrella, the individual groups are then able to devote all their efforts to fund raising and development of their specific focus – whether sports boosters, music boosters, or others. About three years ago, New Glarus Vision decided to take on its own project. With summer traditionally being a time that students lose focus on core skills like reading, the group decided to spearhead “Books for Kids” to put age-appropriate books into the hands of kids leaving school for summer vacation. New Glarus Vision worked with the staff at New Glarus Library on ideas, and came up with a plan to let kids choose some favorites to take home and keep. With a plan in place, funding was needed to support the project. Here’s where the Limburger comes in… Back in the early days, factories in Green County were mainly producing Limburger, Swiss and Brick cheese. But today, Chalet Cheese Co-op stands alone as sole producer of Limburger in

the entire United States. If you’re at all familiar with Limburger, you already know about the fragrance. Connoisseurs also know that as it ages, the cheese itself becomes softer. So soft, that it could nearly slide right onto a slice of rye bread. Add onion and mustard, and now you’ve got yourself a real Limburger Slider! New Glarus Vision’s Limburger Slider booth made its debut at New Glarus Oktoberfest in 2013. It wasn’t just the aroma drawing in hard core Limburger lovers and curious foodies alike; it was also the appearance of those staffing the booth. Mark, Jim Salter, John Wright and others came up with the affectionately goofy costumes (blonde braids, alpine attire) of the “Heidi Men.” Some volunteers also sport luxurious mustaches as "The Tony Girls", in honor of Swiss native and yodeler Tony Zraggen of Alp and Dell Cheese in Monroe. The concept began with a phone call from New Glarus native Beth Luchsinger to Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker Myron Olson at Chalet Cheese Co-op. Olson embraces the project along with the love and pride that local folks have in showcasing Green County’s signature cheese. In addition to events in New Glarus, the group has hosted a booth at Green County Cheese Days in Monroe, turning a love of fun and Limburger into a book to go home with each elementary school student as they walk out the door at the end of the school year.

New Glarus Woods is a 435-acre property offering camping and a paved spur to the Sugar River State Trail. The park has several hiking trails, including the interpretive "Bison Trail" featuring a life-size Bison on the prairie. A very special highlight of the park is the bird's eye view from a boardwalk constructed at canopy level of the trees in the woods. It was designed so that people of all ages and abilities - wheelchairs, walkers, and children - can have access. The boardwalk and observation deck are among the many projects championed by the Friends of New Glarus Woods, an advocacy group dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural resource assets of the park. RIC'S PICKS WINE + CHEESE

From peanut butter and jelly, to spaghetti and meatballs, or cookies and milk – some duos are so iconic that you can’t imagine one without the other. And so it goes with wine and cheese. Both so delicious on their own but behold the magic when they meet up on the palate. It is generally accepted that stronger wines go with stronger tasting cheeses – like Port with Bleu for example. But pairings are subjective– just take your time and make your own rules. We also asked Ric Joranlien of Hawk’s Mill Winery near Browntown to share some ideas on pairing his wine with some of Green County’s favorite types of cheese. Grand Cru Surchoix + Doodle White A lightly oaked Chardonnay with a clean style finish - the perfect contrast for a nutty, tangy cheese. Just moments from New Glarus is the village of Belleville - a community with outstanding outdoor recreation plus two unique shopping stops. A distinct curve in the 930-foot Stewart Tunnel (three miles south on the Badger Trail) means you’ll need a flashlight to navigate Wisconsin’s darkest trail tunnel by bike. To the north, connect with the Capitol City Trail and the Madison area. If you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of the Eagle pairs who nest along the berm of Lake Belle View and the Sugar River. Take the ten-mile challenge: paddle your canoe or kayak on the Upper Sugar River course. A new outlet store on the north side of the village is the place to go for bargains from Duluth Trading Company . The outlet features comfortable and functional wear for

men and women. You'll find "Dry on the Fly" cargo pants, "Buck Naked" underwear, and "Shoreman's Fleece" to withstand Wisconsin's cold winter days, and specially designed gardening apparel and tools for women. In the 1840’s the canton of Glarus in Switzerland was hit by recession. The mechanization of the Industrial Revolution had put many of the weavers and cloth printers out of work, so the community sent representatives to look for new opportunities in the New World. Learn about the epic journey and resilience of those who established the Swiss colony of New Glarus, and get a glimpse into the daily lives of these pioneers by visiting the Swiss Historical Village. Continue the history lesson at New Glarus Hotel (originally New Glarus Haus), circa 1853. By necessity, lodging establishments were among the earliest commercial businesses established in pioneer communities. The dining room here was once a theatre that hosted traveling vaudeville shows. New Glarus Hotel offers authentic Swiss dining, and downstairs you’ll find Ticino Pizzeria – inspired by southern Switzerland’s Italian-speaking canton of Ticino that borders Italy.

Down the river, up the trail, around the bluff and through the prairie. Nature is calling, and Albany has the answer. The Little and Big Sugar Rivers join up just north of the village, offering up the catch of the day. Outfitters can help arrange for a canoe, kayak, or tubing trip down river and a convenient shuttle ride back. The Albany Wildlife Area (public hunting grounds) is open for business – with deer, turkey and pheasants found on 1700 acres along the Sugar River. Nature lovers will want to visit the nearby 62 - acre Muralt Bluff Prairie. Throughout the summer, goldenrods and blazing stars attract various species of butterflies, and grassland birds are common. Take Hwy. 59 west for two miles, then north and west on County F to the access lane and parking area.

Travelers recommend the historic Albany House B&B for your next get-away: gourmet breakfasts, relaxing, comfortable and cozy! Stop downtown for ice cream, pubs, restaurants, and refreshments. Explore local history and family genealogy at Albany Historical Society Museum. Take a selfie at one of Albany’s favorite scenic spots: Sugar River Overlook Park (near post office and library), on the downtown bridge overlooking the Sugar River or from the vantage point of a kayak right on the river.

The 23-mile trail connects the communities of Brodhead, Albany, Monticello and New Glarus. Users include bicyclists, hikers, and geo-cachers. Fourteen trestle bridges cross over the Sugar River and tributaries, while the trail passes by farmland, woods, rolling hills, scenic meadows, remnant prairies and glacial topography.

Outdoor recreation is getting even sweeter this year due to the efforts of local water enthusiasts who have taken on a project to officially mark off a canoe and kayak trail on the Sugar River. Sixteen landing stations will be designated starting in Harrison, Illinois (where the Sugar River meets up with the Pecatonica River) and continuing north through all of Green County to the community of Belleville, Wisconsin. Small wooden kiosks will be set to mark the landings. Each includes a map with a “you are here” location, estimated paddling time to the next landing, and information on the wildlife sharing the river corridor. The trail is divided into three separate segments; each with

corresponding QR code (scan with your smart phone) taking paddlers directly to a custom Google map with details on paddling conditions plus visitor tips. For example, the northern segment includes Exeter Park Landing, featuring picnic facilities and a playground for kids on site; and the southern segment includes Head Gates Park with

restroom facilities and picnic areas, as well as a connection to various amenities in Brodhead. The waterway trail project was led by John Winters of the Decatur Lakes Mill Race Association and involved collaboration with Ron Phillips (owner of Brodhead Signs) and a donation of materials by Ordfordville Lumber.

100+ acres of parkland in the area = outstanding options for outdoor recreation with fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and biking for your enjoyment. The Sugar River Trail begins in downtown Brodhead and a short ride north will take you to the Clarence Covered Bridge. Exchange Square in downtown Brodhead is the backdrop for events like Autumnfest in October, and the nearby Veteran’s Park sets the stage for a Sunday Twilight in the Park concert series in summer. The Wildflower Art Festival (held during the city’s annual Covered Bridge Days in August) draws juried artists displaying original works in jewelry, stained glass, fiber, wood, photography, paintings, ceramics and more. Brodhead’s Fire and Ice Festival continues to grow in popularity – with signature events on the schedule for the weekend including chainsaw ice carving and a lighted holiday parade. Brodhead visitors will notice murals popping up around town.

When Brodhead residents refer to “the race” they’re not talking about a 5K. The Mill Race, originally created to power a water wheel at the grist mill, is a man-made tributary which flows from the Sugar River and later rejoins it. The divergence of the race from the river formed an island between – creating the idea for the Pearl Island Recreational Corridor. Hike, bike, bird watch, canoe, kayak, fish and even stand-up paddle board…Pearl Island is Brodhead’s outdoor recreation gem. grass runways, became known as hub for vintage airplanes. Al moved his collection there, and established a trust to keep the planes accessible to the public and to provide scholarships for aviation careers. In 2012 things started moving toward the vision for the Kelch Aviation Museum. With their non-profit status in place, the group hired Pat Weeden as executive director and purchased 2.5 acres of land adjacent to the airport. “We’re only a museum because we say we are,” says Pat, who is leading the charge on a $1 million dollar capital campaign. With donations and pledges in place, about half has been raised for a 25,000 square foot building which will bring all the aircraft under one roof. Plans include regular hours, docents, and an ambitious curriculum of educational programming. “There’s an art to maintaining these old planes, and we have a golden opportunity to pass these skills on from local mechanics to the next generation,” says Pat, who also points to other teaching applications involving engineering and physics. The oldest in the collection is Al’s 1927 Travel Air 4000. At the time it was built, airplanes as we know them had only been around about ten years. “They were inventing stuff as they went along,” says Pat, who points out that the core of the collection represents engineering milestones of the era – the golden age of aviation. The best part of this museum is that all the aircraft can be flown. “It’s one thing to see it just sitting there,” says Pat, “but another thing entirely to see it fired up and buzzing the airport.” As of print time, tours are available by appointment only. As an inventor and manufacturer in the 1950’s, Al was a pioneer in development of the process to cast aluminum molds for plastic injection, and is credited with the birth of the orange traffic cone.

Learn more with a visit to the Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory and a guided tour at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. The bell in the clock tower of the Historic Green County Courthouse has been striking the hour since 1891. Visit on weekdays for a self- guided tour, a peek into the past in the History Room, and photo opp with judge's robe and gavel.
