ong Term Acute Care (LTAC) provides specialized acute hospital care for medically complex patients who are criti- cally ill, have multi-system com- plication and require hospital- ization, averaging 25 days. Most patients are admitted directly from a short stay hospi- tal requiring continued acute care services. Long term acute care hospitalizations may be covered by Medicare, worker’s compensation, managed care or private insurance depending on the patients insurance. Long Term Acute Care Hospitals serve patients who have experienced extensive surgery or complex medical problems. Patients are visited by physicians daily. Patients transferred to a Long Term Acute Care Hospital require many services. Services provided consist of the following: • 24 hour physician cover- age • 24 hour nursing care • 24 hour respiratory thera- py • Ventilator management/ weaning/ tracheotomy care • IV therapy • Rehabilitation services- Services Provided

Referrals can be accepted from physicians, case managers, social workers, other hospital staff, family or friends. Anyone may make referrals to a Long Term Care Hospital; however a physician order is needed for admission to the Acute Care Hospital. Long Term Acute Hospitals differ from Sub-Acute or nursing home programs because the patients require more intensive nursing needs and specialized programs. Physicians visit patients daily and direct the interdiscipli- nary team as the patient needs change.
